Sunday Sept. 22, 2019.

Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the State of Osun has urged Nigerian graduates to deploy knowledge and skills acquired while in the college for societal usage and benefit of humanity.

The Governor gave this charge yesterday during the 8th Convocation Ceremonies of the Osun State University, Osogbo, held at the school's Auditorium.

Mr. Oyetola enjoined the graduands to be responsible persons who were ready to change and transform the world.

He therefore tasked them (the graduands) to utilise the analytical skills, competencies, knowledge, attitude and character instilled in them by the University, adding: "the world is waiting for you to employ all these to contribute to humanity and improve the society".

"I congratulate the graduands here today for the successful completion of their programme and graduation.

"Distinguished graduands, there's no gainsaying the fact that this is a great day for you, as you have transited from the class of students to responsible persons, who are ready to shape and transform the world", the Governor said.

The state Governor, who is a Visitor to the University, further urged the newly graduated students to be of good characters, saying the certificates they received from the school were awarded to them on the basis of character and learning.

In order of importance, character, according to Mr. Oyetola, came before learning, adding that it's character that opened door for knowledge and kept it opened until they completed their courses and earned a degree.

The Visitor said: "The State of Osun Omoluabi ethos of hardwork, discipline, decency, selflessness, and good neighbourliness, which your University professes, has been impacted on you to make you responsible members of society.

"The world is replete with persons of talents but is looking for persons of character, who are in short supply.

"I therefore enjoin you to be good ambassadors of the University and the state by displaying the highest level of character anywhere you find yourselves".

The University with ten faculties graduated a total number of one thousand eight hundred and fourteen students out of which forty nine students made a First Class degree.

The graduation ceremonies where the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo delivered a Convocation lecture on "Decades of Chequered Nationhood: Nigeria Still Holds the Key to Africa's Development", and where the former Governor of the state and current Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola had honorary degree award conferred on him, was well attended by eminent personages from academia and every other sphere of life.
